Native Habitat and Species Information
Bluestripe Clownfish native habitat, distribution, behavior & aquarium compatibility.
The Bluestripe Clownfish or as it is also commonly referred to as within the aquarium hobby as the Orange-finned Clownfish is a versitile fish species that is suitable for beginning aquarists and sought after by advanced reef aquarists. The Bluestripe Clownfish is similar in appearance to the popular Sebae Clownfish, but tends to have more orange on the face, dorsal and pectoral fins along with the blue coloration on its stripes and tail fin. Bluestripe Clownfish are a hardy species that does well in many different aquarium environments and will consume a varied diet of food ranging from meaty items to herbivore preparations.
The body of the Bluestripe Clownfish is a dark brown to almost black in color with two white/light blue bars that fade to a darker blue at the edges. The widest stripe is just behind the eye and a more narrow stripe is located about halfway down the body. The bulk of the body varies in color from a dark orange to black depending on geographical location. The Bluestripe Clownfish has more orange on the face, dorsal fin and pectoral fins, more so than the similar appearance of a Sebae Clownfish.
Aquarium Care
How to successfully keep Bluestripe Clownfish in the home aquarium.
Bluestripe Clownfish do well in 30 gallon or larger aquariums, and are at home in both fish-only and reef aquariums. While Bluestripe Clownfish prefer to have a host anemone (Entacemaea quadricolor, Heteractic crispa or most bulb anemones) in which to live, it is not an abosulte necessity. This species is semi-aggressive and will defend its territory against similar sized fish species, and will often be aggressive towards other clownfish species.
As with many clownfish species, the Bluestripe Clownfish becomes more territorial and aggressive with age and size. The addition of a host anemone will often reduce the aggressiveness of this species as it will have a home in which to spend much of its time when not feeding, thus shrinking their territory. Despite being semi-aggressive, the Bluestripe Clownfish will do well in fish-only and reef aquarium environments.
Feeding & Nutrition
How to feed and provide proper nutrition for Bluestripe Clownfish.
Bluestripe Clownfish are omnivores that will consume a large variety of meaty and vegetable preparations, including live, frozen and flaked foods. In the wild this species feeds on plankton and algae, along with meaty scrapes when available. In the home aquarium they will readily consume herbivore preparations and meaty items such as mysid shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped fish, mussel or other meaty items.
