Found in the Carribean and Tropical Atlantic waters the Grey Angel is a very attractive species that is similar in appearance to the French Angel, except in that the French Angel has distinctive yellow rims around the scales and a darker grey almost black overall body color. Grey Angels have a more subtile beauty not unlike the Koran Angel in that they mix contrasting shades of grey and dark blue over much of the body. Combine this with their interesting shape, swimming style and small vibrante highlights on the face and fins, and the Grey Angel can make a very impressive aquarium inhabitant.

Keep in mind that their large size and need for swimming areas and protective coves makes this fish suitable for only those with large aquariums. While a 90 gallon tank can house this species, if you really want to provide a suitable habitat you will want to provide a larger aquarium with more horizontal swimming room and extensive rock work. As with other full size angels the Grey Angel is very destructive in a reef environment.

Adult Grey Angels have light grey scales over the majority of the body with darker blue/grey scales spaced apart over the majority of the body. The chin area is a whitish smoky grey color with the outer part of the mouth colored white. The eye, lips and fins are sometimes narrowly rimmed with a bright blue color.

Juvenile Grey Angels are a much darker grey, almost black with oval white bands reaching vertically across the entire fish and found all along the body. Yellow accents can be found on the anal fins and forehead area.

In the Aquarium environment the Grey Angel is peaceful towards other tank mates, with the exception of other full size angels. Do not keep them in a overly crowded tank as this will provoke the Grey Angel into being more intolerant and territorial. Like most fish the Grey Angel requires areas of refuge to feel safe and happy in an aquarium environment, so due to it's large size a large aquarium with suitable rock work is required.

The Grey Angelfish is an omnivore and likes to feed on marine algae, mysid shrimp, Spirulina, Sponges and other fresh or frozen seafoods. The diet of all larger angels consists heavily of sponge material, so it is recommended to feed them an "Angel Formula" which contains a very high sponge percentage mixed in the food.

Be sure that this species (like most) is fed 2 - 3 times daily what they will eat within a few minutes. As with most angels a mixture of meaty foods, marine algae & sponge material is vital to their health and immune system.
